Cambodian Beng/Afzelia

Pahudia Cochinchinensis or Afzelia xylocarpa

From the proprietor's reserve, sawed in the 1990's.

Beng is also called Rosewood in Cambodia, because of its beautiful reddish brown color, but it is not a true Rosewood, so we use its Cambodian name. We are told it is very similar to African Afzelia. It is hard, very stable, machines beautifully and is a pleasure to work with. We sawed most of our cants into wide book matched sets or vertical grain boards. This is one or our favorite materials; Asians and Europeans are familiar with it but it is very rare now and almost unheard of in the United States.
